Release notes GETM v1.8

- released at April 1st 2010

After around three years we have finally managed to release a new stable version of GETM which includes all new features and fixed issues of the last three years.

A three-year cycle is far too long and at the last traditional annual developers meeting - always held in late January - it was decided to speed up the release cycle considerably. We will therefore in the future aim at an annual release with a release date of April 1st.

In addition to an updated release cycle we have also decided to give 'git' a chance as version control system. We are using SourceForge to host GETM and the development can be followed here.

In addition to a more fixed release schedule a number of other decisions was made regarding the further advancement of GETM. Most notably a list of people have been appointed each responsible for a specific part of GETM. This list is intended to be dynamic and will at least change once every year at the developers meeting. The list can be found here.

New features:

  • internal pressure gradient scheme suggested by Stelling & van Kester 1997
  • internal pressure gradient scheme suggested by Shchepetkin & McWilliams 2003
  • various new barotropic boundary methods (such as Flather conditions)
  • advection of turbulent kinetic energy and turbulence length scale related quantity (typically dissipation rate)
  • spatially varying sea surface elevation filter (An) for stabilisation
  • GETM Bio support for GOTM v4 Bio module (to run biogeochemical models within GETM)
  • checks for NaN and valid value ranges
  • timers included
  • OpenMP support
  • support for various MPI systems
  • spatially varying bottom roughness
  • rewrite of topo handling (support for spherical curvilinear coodinates not implemented any more)
  • support for NetCDF4
  • saving shear and BVF in output files
  • saving hotstart files in NetCDF format
  • drying and flooding emergency break (for steep bathymetry with drying and flooding) to guarantee positive water depths AND volume conservation
  • surface fresh water flux implementation
  • NO_BAROTROPIC mode (useful for 2DV slice models to eliminate influence of surface elevation slopes, see Umlauf et al., 2010)
  • calculate and output bottom stresses

Fixed issues:

  • 3D boundary value interpolation
  • dropped possibly unstable support for having a smaller baroclinic domain within the setup (iimin/jjmin indexing)
  • having the compiler option NONNEGSALT (to avoid negative salinities as they might occur even for monotone advection schemes)
  • critical bug in Blumberg & Mellor internal pressure gradient scheme

Up-coming developments:

  • adaptive vertical coordinates (Hofmeister et al., 2010)
  • non-hydrostatic extension
  • coupling with SWAN wave model
  • new method for maintaining and manipulating namelist files
  • a flexible output method
  • a new method to compute numerically induced mixing and comparison with physically induced mixing (Burchard and Rennau, 2008)
  • rewrite of vertical coordinates implementation(s)
